1.2 - Product Overview
Tour de Vocabulaire is a game that is designed to entertain you
while enhancing your French vocabulary and your knowledge of
French history. The object of the game is to move the French flag
along a pre-defined course across the country while using the least
possible amount of 'gasoline'. The flag is moved by correctly matching
a French word to it's English counterpart. Your best scores and those
of all other players are automatically tracked to allow you to
objectively monitor your progress over time.
2.0 - Installation
Tour de Vocabulaire can be used on any IBM or compatible PC with
at least 256K of memory and a graphics adapter.
Tour de Vocabulaire can be executed from a hard disk drive or
from a diskette. Each of the files shipped with the product should be
present in order for the program to run properly.
If Tour de Vocabulaire is to be run from a hard disk, each of the
files shipped with the product should be copied to a single directory.
Although the directory can be assigned any name you choose,
'\TOURDV' would be a logical choice.
If you choose to run the program from a diskette, you simply
need to copy each of the files shipped with the product onto a
preformatted diskette.
3.0 - Playing the Game
Now that the preliminaries are out of the way, let's play Tour de
Vocabulaire!!!
3.1 - Startup
If you've installed Tour de Vocabulaire on your hard disk drive, follow
these steps to run the program:
- use the CD command to change to the hard disk directory in which
you installed Tour de Vocabulaire.
- at the DOS prompt, type TOURDV
- press the ENTER key
If you're going to run Tour de Vocabulaire from a diskette, follow these
steps:
- start your PC in the usual manner
- insert the diskette containing Tour de Vocabulaire into the
diskette drive
- at the DOS prompt, type TOURDV
- press the ENTER key
The software automatically determines the type of video display
adapter that is installed in your PC. If you have a VGA display adapter,
the game is displayed in full color. If any other type of adapter is
detected, the game is displayed in monochrome graphics mode. The
software also automatically determines whether or not a mouse is
installed on your PC. If no mouse is installed, the game allows you to
use your keyboard instead.
Upon executing the Tour de Vocabulaire program, you are
asked to input your initials. These initials are used to record your
results so that you can track your progress over time and compare your
results to those of other users of the system. Three initials must be
entered.
3.2 - History Quiz
Before you can begin playing the game, you must fill up your
gasoline tank by answering three questions regarding French history.
Your success in answering these three history questions determines the
reward you will receive for each correct vocabulary question until the
current gasoline tank is depleted. This cycle is repeated each time you
need to refill your gasoline tank. Each gasoline tank lasts for fifty
vocabulary words.
As mentioned above, the number of kilometers your flag moves
for each correct vocabulary answer is determined by your performance
on the history quiz:
KM Per Correct
History Quiz Performance Vocabulary Answer
0 of 3 30
1 of 3 40
2 of 3 50
3 of 3 60
The history question is presented on the left-hand portion of the
screen and four possible answers are presented on the right-hand
portion of the screen. In order to select an answer, move the cursor to
the answer you believe to be correct. If no mouse is present, the cursor
is moved by pressing the TAB key.
If you are using a mouse, complete your selection by pressing
the left-hand mouse button. If no mouse is present, complete the
selection by pressing the ENTER key.
The circle to the left of the correct answer is then highlighted. If
you have selected the correct answer, the circle is highlighted with the
color green. If you selected an incorrect answer, the circle to the left
of the correct answer is highlighted with the color red.
If you have selected the correct answer while using a
monochrome display, the square to the left of the answer is completely
filled in with the color black. If you selected an incorrect answer, the
square to the left of the correct answer is partially filled by a black
stripe.
3.3 Screen Layout
After you have completed the first history quiz, a group of status
boxes are arranged around the onscreen map of France.
In the upper left-hand corner of the screen is the Location
Tracking box. This box tells you which cities you are currently traveling
between, the total distance between the two cities and the distance that
you must travel to reach the current destination city.
In the middle right-hand portion of the screen is the Vocabulary
Performance box. This box gives you information regarding streaks,
percentage of questions answered correctly, number of fill-ups you've
had, and the number of kilometers you are receiving for each correct
answer.
In the middle left-hand portion of the screen is the gas gauge,
which allows you to determine how soon you will next encounter a
history quiz. Each full gas tank lasts for 50 vocabulary words.
3.4 - Tracking your progress
A replica of the French flag also appears on the screen at this
time. It is initially positioned in the south of France at the city of
Nice. The flag moves on the screen each time you correctly answer a
vocabulary question. As mentioned above, the number of kilometers
you are awarded for each correct answer is determined by your
performance on the most recent history quiz.
3.5 - Vocabulary questions
Finally we get to the vocabulary questions! The procedures for
displaying and responding to the vocabulary questions are identical to
those used for the history questions above. If the question is answered
correctly, the circle to the left of the correct response is filled in
with the color green. If an incorrect answer is chosen, the circle to
the left of the correct answer is filled in with the color red.
After the correct answer is displayed, the part of speech (noun,
verb, etc.) of the word is displayed below the French word.
3.6 - Bonus points
Bonus points are awarded for answering five or more
consecutive questions correctly. For each consecutive correct answer in
excess of 4, the player is credited with 25 bonus kilometers. The
awarding of bonus kilometers is confirmed by an on-screen message.
3.7 - Scoreboard
Any time you choose the 'quit' option, the status of the current
game is saved so that you can resume later in the same position. After
the main game board is cleared, a scoreboard appears on the screen.
The scoreboard consists of five components. Across the top of the
screen, you will see a summary of the game that is currently in progress.
Below the current game summary, you will see two boxes which
display the best 'fuel economy' that has been recorded in previous
games. Good 'fuel economy' is attained by a combination of correct
vocabulary questions, correct history questions, and bonus points. The
'fuel economy' box on the left displays the performance of all players.
The box on the right shows the best fuel economy performances of the
player who is currently signed on.
Below the 'fuel economy' boxes, you will see a pair of side-by-
side boxes which display the best percentage on vocabulary questions in
previous games. This is a more accurate measure of the change in your
French vocabulary proficiency.
